As we write, there is a glimmer of sunshine in the sky and it’s less than a week until the Spring Bank Holiday – the end of May is almost upon us and summer (we hope) is hopefully just around the corner. Which begs the question, is your car ready?
For those preparing to make the most of the short week and go away for a few days have you checked the following:
- The pressure in your tyres (including the spare if you have one)? You should be able to find the recommended levels in your handbook or on a sticker perhaps in the fuel flap or the glove compartment? Do you need to adjust the pressure if your car is going to be fully laden with luggage and passengers?
- The oil levels? Ideally check your oil once the car has reached operating temperature and then shut off the engine and allow the oil to settle for a few minutes before checking. The lines on the dipstick do not show ‘hot’ and ‘cold’ they show you how much oil there is. Bottom line is the minimum you need, the top line is full. Top up your oil if you need to – if you don’t know what with, give us a ring (01727 856543)
- The water levels? Both the water for the radiator and your screen wash – especially if you’re going on a long journey.
- That the air conditioning is working – it’s worth running it for 10 minutes or so every couple of weeks even if you don’t leave it to make sure it’s ok. If you’re not sure, speak to Rob.
Alternatively, book your car in with us for a routine service and we’ll make sure that everything is safe and ready to go.
Other things you can think of about include:
- That your SatNav is up to date – download any new updates from their website and if you have the instructions (and map) for where you’re going if you need them.
- Checking all car seats are safely in place – especially if you have moved seats to accommodate passengers or extra luggage.
- Ensuring you have your first aid kit, fire extinguisher and high-vis jackets somewhere you can get at them should you need to
- Checking your breakdown cover is up to date and includes everything you may need
- Making sure that your tax, insurance and MOT will all be in date when you travel.
Whatever you’re doing over the Bank Holiday, we hope you drive safely and have a great time. We’ll be writing more about travelling abroad soon so if you’ve got any questions please do contact us and we’ll try and include the answer in our next post.
