The history of Verulam Autos is well known. It was formed in 1972 by Alan Smith and Mick Baralett and has been in Albert Street, St Albans ever since. The business has grown through word of mouth recommendations – a fact of which everyone involved is extremely proud.
Rob and Steve took over the business in 1989 shortly before Alan’s death.
There has been a garage of sorts on this site for almost 100 years. In 1972 when Verulam Autos started, Alan and his brother dug back through to create the office and back inspection area. As the earth was removed they discovered many car parts dating back to the 1920’s, including marked parts from the Model T Ford, tools and other parts that had been dropped to the ground at some point.
If you do visit the garage you will see that this must have been an phenomenal effort to clear that amount of earth, and waste by hand, especially with so many bits of metal in there!
It is thought that there may have been some form of kiln or pottery works on the site as well as at the time, hundreds of clay pipes were dug up. Many were stamped with the St Albans coat of arms with many remaining completely intact. More have been dug up over the years suggesting that this was an area of intense industry, possibly using the clay from the banks of the River Ver.
