One of the local motoring highlights of the year is undoubtedly Classics On The Common which will be held on Harpenden Common again this year on 30th July. Ticket applications for 4 wheeled vehicles have now closed but for those on two wheels, you can apply up until 23rd July using this application form.
So, what can you expect at Classics On The Common?
If the weather obliges, Classics On The Common is the perfect summer afternoon/evening out for anyone of any age, interested in cars – be it the design, the noise, the history or just the smell! Every car on display will be at least 20 years old – some will be closer to 100. There will be a huge variety too – British and American Classics, pre-war vehicles, car clubs, ‘newer’ Fords (MKII Escorts etc), plenty of Vauxhall vehicles and pretty much everything else. Many of the owners will be more than happy to chat about their vehicles and by virtue of being there, they’ll be happy for you to wander round the cars and take photos (just don’t touch!).
The event opens at 2pm and runs long into the evening. With over 1000 4-wheeled vehicles booked in, you can easily spend several hours looking round – and chances are you’ll probably find someone there you’ll know as so many people attend! Going as a spectator is free although the organisers, Harpenden Rotary Club will no doubt rattle a bucket in your general direction because as much as this is a motoring event, it also raises money for a number of really worthy causes.
Logistics
The traffic on the day (assuming the weather is even moderately good) will be mad! We frequently see Classics queuing past the end of the road up Holywell Hill whilst we’re still working. Allow plenty of time (and if you’re bringing a classic be prepared for queuing) and then expect to park and walk. It is quicker (we kid you not!) to park at St Albans City station, get the train to Harpenden and then walk to the Common than drive over from St Albans.
There are plenty of toilet facilities available and for one day only, all the surrounding pubs are happy for you to use their loos without having to make a purchase. Most of the pubs will be offering food or running a barbeque so if you haven’t the time (or inclination!) to pack a picnic you can still eat well.
Safety – the marshalling team are there for a reason. We shall say no more!
If you do go, we suspect you will be hooked and pencilling the 2015 date in your diary as soon as you can. If it’s not your thing, don’t plan a night out in Harpenden on the 30th July – it might just be a bit busy!
